Having Vista confirm the death of excessive Aqua (or should I say Aero), I felt it was high time the NewsFire icon receive a makeover. One and two depict before & after respectively. Moving away from the obvious gloss and towards something with subtle effects and a refined feel, just like what is being hinted for the future all over the show:

Adobe Creative Suite 3 sheds all aqua elements within the user interface, replacing it with soft unobtrusive tones. This visual clutter diet is even more apparent in the new icons, stylised imagery from CS2 is superseded with easily distinguished coloured tiles.

Mail was an early adopter of this subtlety; design that has spilled over from Apple's Pro Applications. Applications such as Coda, iTunes and Xtorrent are shining examples of unified user interfaces.

How-to install the replacement icon:

  1. 1. Download the .icns file
  2. 2. Locate NewsFire in your Applications folder, right click and "Show Package Contents"
  3. 3. Replace the .icns file located in Contents > Resources
  4. 4. You're done!
